Needs based behaviour or challenging behaviour

Issue

Often the behaviours displayed by someone with dementia is described as difficult or challenging. The truth is they are in fact simply driven by the person's needs.  However, they are challenging and may be difficult to manage and we understand this.

Some of the more common needs behaviours are;

  1. I want to go home.

  2. Hallucinations.

  3. Repetitive language asking the same questions over and over.

  4. Rummaging, moving things, forgetting where they have placed things.

  5. Aggression.

  6. Sexual disinhibitions especially those suffering louie body dementia.

What we do

We train you with strategies to help you manage what appear to be challenging and difficult behaviours.

For example we train you to use a Connect and Redirect approach when managing your loved one wanting to go home or visit their parents. We may suggest you see a geriatrician to help manage hallucinations.

Outcome

We’ll train how to manage these needs based behaviours and provide a sense of calm to your loved one.
