Safety in the home

Issue

Safety in the home falls into two areas. The first is Physical Safety, here we are looking at all areas within the home. Is there a risk of falling, are they likely to leave the stove on, or maybe a concern about safety with knives and safety in the bathroom.

And, the second is Cognitive Safety, where we’re looking at financial safety, misplacing money, valuable jewelry, valuable documents or making sure they’re not falling victim to scams.

What we do

We either visit your home and complete a Physical Assessment or we connect with you online and complete a Telehealth Assessment. From this we provide a written report with recommendations. We work through each of the Safety Issues we have discovered and we explain our recommendations.

Here are some examples of recommendations for some of the common safety issues;

  1. Leaving the stove on - there are apps that can switch off stoves through to stoves that do this automatically.

  2. At risk of falling - instal rails at the right height in contrasting colours to the walls to ensure visibility through to a falls monitor to be worn around the neck or wrist. Maybe putting in a hospital bed instead of a normal bed if they need a rail. Removing slippery mats through to a laser beam near the bed so you’re alerted when there’s a fall or when someone is getting out of bed at night.

  3. At risk of leaving the home - installing a push lock at the top of the door.

  4. Misplacing valuables or money - Installing a safe. Or working with the family to replace valuable items with similar but less valuable.

We keep up to date with technology and solutions by working closely with Assistive Technology Australia.

We’re happy to oversee the implementation of our recommendations either working with you, a handyperson, or tradesperson. We’re like a case manager. If you don’t have access to help we can provide the right help.

We’re good at making adaptations to the living space based on the safety issues we find in the report.

We can provide ongoing support by Physical Visits or Telehealth Support.

The outcome

You will receive a written report with recommendations on what you need to do to improve the physical and cognitive safety of your home.

We’ll ensure our recommendations are understood and adaptations to the home have been made. We can project manage the installation of technology or infrastructure improvements to the home, it’s an end to end service.
